Step 4:  Adjust the Valve Clearances by Swapping the Shims

Slide the rocker arm...

...to expose the shim.
(The shim is the little metal disk sitting atop the valve spring retainer.)

The rocker arms slide to the side, for easy removal of the shims.  The outer rocker arm (the one closest to you) for the exhaust valves, slides toward you, while the inner arm, slides toward the center of the engine.
The intake valves both share the same, thick rocker arm that slides together, (you'll need to slide the outer exhaust rocker arm to make room before sliding the big intake one.

Doesn't make any sense?  It will when you're looking at it.

Email me if you're having trouble with this part.

Here's another view of that.

And here's what the little shims look like when you magnet (or tweeze) them out.  They are 7.5mm in diameter and range from 2.50 to 3.10 mm in thickness, in .05mm increments.

Sometimes there will be visible markings left on the shim, but it's a better idea to measure them with a micrometer to be sure.  If you don't have a micrometer of your own, your dealership might be willing to measure them for you with theirs, if they're not too hostile about you taking service jobs away from them.

Use a micrometer to measure your shim thicknesses.
