Lolita turned out to be the perfect moto-touring bike, getting better than 56.6 mpg (more than 250 miles per tankful) AND she was quiet enough that heard this strange noise on Big Sur Highway, which turned out to be a gaggle of bull Elephant-Seals beating the daylights out of each other (inset.)

Self-portrait at the Kinko's in Monterey. (The line at the Monterey Bay Aquarium was too long.)

...at the Pigeon Point lighthouse on the Beautiful Big Sur Highway. There were vacancies at the lovely old hostel there...next time.

Despite being a hot day, it was nice-n-cool passing through the Avenue of the Giants.

Highway 36 is perhaps one of the most-fun roads I've ever motorcycled on.
A few years ago, I complimented a grouchy man who worked the
counter at the campground there, on his nice road:
"Monkeys!" Was his reply. "This dang road was designed BY MONKEYS!"
I persisted, "Ahhh, but these must be some kind of SUPERmonkeys with
abonormally large craniums."
"You wouldn't say that if you had to commute on it every day!" he concluded.
Ha.

Highway 299, along the Trinity River is another road that every motorcyclist should ride at least once. So beautiful and so fun! |
